6. EVALUATION

I learnred to use various technologies during the course in order to create Times Up such as; digital HD cameras, Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro. I didint use Title Sequence so i dont really know much about it. The things i have used were really easy to get to grips with, for instance Final Cut Pro is a very complex programme but despite that its very user friendly and easy to work with. Same can be said for the digital cameras, tripods, and Soundtrack Pro.

A good distribution for 'Times Up' would probably be Universal Pictures or Paramount Vantage, seeing as they are responsible for distributing the likes of The Bourne Trillogy and the No Country For Old Men, which are both high ranking thrillers. The internet could be used to launch this movie to a wider audience by doing things such as publishing it on Youtube, or maby use a social networking site such as Facebook to advertise the clip by actualy posting the video or by sending a link to another website, such as Youtube. also you can advertise on Facebook as well as creating a 'fan page' or a 'group' which people generaly use to promote themselves or something else, e.g. rookie producers/rappers.

2. EVALUATION

Times Up represents social groups because its about racism towards muslim people. The muslim culture is an obvious one to target due to themes such as terrorisim. this can emphasise with our clip because 'Times Up' is about a white killer on the loose who is after muslim women for no apparent reason, which is psychotic but also obviously racist.

Thriller sub genre

The subgenre that we are doing for our thriller is that we are creating a psychological thriller.

Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the thriller genre. This genre contains other elements like mystery and drama. However, our film contains religion.

Thrillers often emphasize intense, physical action over the character's psyche. Psychological thrillers tend to reverse this formula to a certain degree, emphasizing the characters more than the actual plot.

The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the others or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state.

Sometimes the suspense comes from within ones mind where they decide to try and resolve a conflict themselves. Usually, this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them. These conflicts are made more vivid with physical expressions of the conflict in the means of either physical manifestations, or physical torsions of the characters at play.

5) Evaluation who would be the audience for your media product?

This bag shows that it is a girls handbag because the bag contains things like e.g. Make up, hair brush etc... The way these things can tell what sort of person or who they are is for instance by looking at the credit cards in her bag it shows that this person is earning money and can identify her age group.

However, the type of audience that would be attracted to our film would be young muslim girls.

The lifestyle summary I would give about a hand bag belonging to one of our typical target audience will be that:

Tanzila is a student from City and Islington college. You can tell this by the ID card she carries around in her bag. From this card you can tell that she is a muslim because of her ID picture where she is wearing a scarf and you can tell what age group she is as well. The way you could tell that she is islamic is because she carries around a pocket quran and a small prayer timetable. There is also a gold chain that has a locket on it with an islamic symbol. There are some recipts in her bag that shows she loves to buy make up, bags, scarfs, headpins etc... There is also a small poster in her bag that shows she is religious because it gives out information about a islamic talk which only implies to women.

7) EVALUATION-LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMENARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNED IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCTS

We have made alot of progress from doing our prelimanary task to doing our final media product. When we first started filming the preliminary task we found it really confusing because we were having trouble editing things together because the clips were quite different for e.g. whilst one clip was light the othe clip was dark and there were alot of clips that were out of focus too.

When we were editing things together it was really confusing because alot of the clips we did were not as good and there were clips that we needed to film. But because we were not able to film again we managed to put other things in with it to make it longer and it all fit well together.

We also used live type to add the titles in but we managed to do one title and had difficulty adding in the other titles.

Due to technical difficulties we wasn't able to upload any clips from our prelimanary task and our final film 'Times Up.'

8) EVALUATION-AUDIENCE FEEDBACK AND COMMENT

Our film 'Times up' was shown in a local cinema called 'The screen on the green'.

Our film started showing the location shots that we had taken this made the atmosphere mysterious, also the soundtrack that we had created tensed an eery, this made the audience go quiet because there was no action and the story line was unclear.

Towards the end when the characters were being introduced and the effects were becoming scary, the audience were shocked.

They were mostly shocked when they finally worked out the storyline was.

The way they were able to guess what the film is about was when the scenes were all about islam and focused hugely on muslim women.

Also there were alot of shots on a male white killer who was destroying islamic pictures by lighting them up etc... the fire connotates danger which was used throughout the action scene, we decided to not do any physical action because our film was based on phsychological thriller. We also manged to create suspense in our film by introducing the storyline towards the end. The way this was a suspence because it arouses alot of questions in the audiences head as to what the storyline could be then when the storyline is finally introduced it shocked our audiance. This is because the images of the location shots was used to create the suspence and then when the fire just pops up out of now where with a horrible music in the back ground and there was a mosque in negative that was when the storyline came in and it made it intense and captured the audiances reaction to the film.

The way we know our thriller film was a success was that we got a good audience reaction and we managed to do all the things we set up to do i.e. creating suspense, meeting the storyline successfully and successfully creating a psychological thriller. What I was happy about our film was that it was really different from everyone elses and it was on religion.

6) EVALUATION-WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

While we was going through the process of making our film 'Times up' we had to use so many different kinds of technology, such as
JVC digital tapeless cameras to record,
internet to reasearh,
final cut pro to create and edit our film,
livetype to edit our titles,
soundtrack pro to make our soundtrack,
also blogger to create our posts.

At first it was quite hard learning to use the camera and going through the risk assesment over and over again just to make sure it was safe , sometimes it was quite annoying but then we jus got used to it.

we had no problems researching from the internet what so ever.

the hardest thing we went through was to learn how to use final cut pro , how to to put the right clips together with the right times, and also learning to use live type and soundtrack pro was at first like a jigsaw puzzle but we found the pieces at the end of it.

most of the times blogger caused problems such as slow uploading or not uploading pictures and videos at all which created a big problem for us, unfortunately we couldn't sort it out.

if i could do this project again i would use time more sensibly.

5)EVALUATION-WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT

Sumaiya , 17 , a clever, muslim ,asian girl who is currently studying Alevels at city and islington college always has her head burried in her books, also she has a passion for reciting the qur'an and preaching it's meaning.

she always carries a pocket version of the quran with her because she believes it will keep her safe.

she also loves to go out shopping to buy scarfs with her friends.

our film 'Times up' will appeal to her because it is about the struggles that muslim girls have to go through in London.

5) EVALUATION-Who would be the audience for your media product?

Tanzila, 17, a student at City of Islington college, loves going mosque to pray for inner peace and quiet. She loves shopping for jilbabs and niqabs in islamic shop specifically zam zam. She keeps an arabian perfume called athor in her handbag. This is because there is no sort of alcohol in it. The one thing she never leaves home with out is her pocket Qur'an as this helps her with any sort of problems she faces.

3&4) Film distribution "EVALUATION"

Another way that films are distributed is through trailers where the audience get a chance to watch bits of the film before it is actually released in the cinemas. We are going to market our film in a film festival as well where we will attract a wider audience than the target audience and attract other companies who will want to distribute the film. 'Shaun of the dead' is an e.g. of a film that was marketed in a film festival they changed the genre from it being just 'ZOMCOM' which is aimed at males, 'ROMCOM' which is aimed at females. In the film festival it was changed to 'ROMZOMCOM' so immediately it was made clear that it was aiming at a wider audience both male and females.

We are going to use convergence to market our film where we're going to converge a mobile and the film together like the 'Star Trek' phone. This will attract more people because it's going to inherit fans for e.g. Nokia marketed the 'Star Trek' phone. People who are a fan of Nokia would be interested in the converged phone and would even be interested in watching the film.

We would also market our media product online like 'Star Trek' did they put their product in trekki websites, facebook, twitter and other sites etc... where they inherited fans giving them a huge audience.

What I have learnt about using these technologies is that there were a lot of things that went wrong for e.g. Camera not charged but there were a lot of things that helped make our film a success such as the softwares for e.g. Final Cut Pro which was used to create our film we were able to add so many different effects such as fade, slow motion, negative effect etc...

To create 'Times Up' we used three types of software; Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, and Live type. Live Type was used to create all the titles.Soundtrack Pro was used to create the sound and, Final Cut Pro was the main software which was used to put everything together including; the titles, the sound and all the clips that made the intro clip.

3/4) EVALUATION-What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?

Technologies have been produced in the levels of distribution and marketing that is why i will distribute my film through film festivals.
Some of the technologies i may use are computer generated images also known as cgi, is the aplication of the field of computer graphics, more specifically, 3D computer graphics, to special effects in film, as i have quite alot of special effects like fades etc.

Because i have flame effects in my thriller, i may use pyrotechnics to make it more realistic and entertaining as this would is what they do in the entertaintment industry.

Another way could be using Green Screens. A technique used for mixing two images or frames together in which a colour from 1 image is removed and revealed on another.
the colours usually used are blue and green as these colours are considered to be the furthest away from the skin tone.

I would place my thriller into the real world of general cinematic release as i want it to get a mainstream release
I would be careful that my film doesnt clash with any other films while being released as this would be a major problem and my film would end up being a hit.

To prevent piracy i would have a global release date, this should cut down on pirates copying the film in one country and distributing it in another where the film has not yet been released.

I would also try relseasing in different formats, such as imax cinema. Short for Image Maximum, is a motion picture film format and projected standard created by a canadas Imax coorporation.
The traditional version of Imax has the capasity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems, therefor making my film more exciting to watch as the screen is much bigger and by releasing the film in different types of cinema standards shows the audiences different experiences.

During the marketing of my thriller, i would have many technologies utalised. I would make an official website offering people alot to do like downloading the soundtrack for ringtones on mobile fones, aswell as wallpapers.
I would have social networking sites linked to the websites, such as facebooks, twitter etc, as this shows i have tried addapting a wide range of audience.

I would allow people to view my thriller film through DVD, HD , Blu Ray etc. It would make different viewing experiences as some people get to watch it with high quality definition rather than others downloading a bad copy from the net.
Lastly i would also allow mt film to be viewed through different ranges of platforms, such as, DVD players, PCS, PS3 etc.

2) Representation "EVALUATION"

In our film 'Times Up' We used a variety of clips and images to represent our main story line which is racism. There were clips of people wearing scarfs and there were a lot of religious islamic symbols used as well. This represented muslim women this is because our killer is a white male who only kills muslim women so we were only focusing on women rather than focusing on a muslim asian community as a whole. They are being represented as victims and are socially excluded. The reason why muslim women are victims is because they are an easy target and they stand out more because of their clothing.

In this image we can see a multi cultural society. This picture goes well with our film as it represents the asian community, more importantly muslims and our thriller is about racism to muslims.

Our film 'TIMES UP' is of low budget and is made by me n some other students , it will be released over the internet on vimeo, embedded on to a blog and find it's way on to youtube. it will get a cinematic screening and shared screening amongst my peers and maybe family.

i would use the internet for further distribution by making a website to promote the film with free downloads such as film related games, pictures and the soundtrack, also i would have online posters of the film.

i would attract my audience by giving them free downloads also by teaming up with a organisation such as HMV CURZON because they would give special rewards such as free tickets for CURZON cinemas in different magazines for different genders so it can can attract more people also by word of mouth our film could also be promoted.

Thriller Movie Descritpion

Thrillers often take place in settings such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions, or high seas. The heroes in most thrillers are frequently "hard men" accustomed to danger: law enforcement officers, spies, soldiers or seamen . However, they may also be ordinary citizens drawn into danger by accident. A good example of a thriller is 'Jaws'. Jaws is a 1975 American film directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on a novel by Peter Benchley. The police chief of Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town, tries to protect beachgoers from a giant great white shark by closing the beach, only for the town council to change the decision, which wants the beach to remain open to draw a profit from tourists during the summer season. during that time, several attacks take place and the police chief enlists the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter.

3&4) Film distribution EVALUATION

Film distributers try to persuade audiences by entertaining them and use compelling ways to want to make them want to see the film. Distributers allow the audience to have a little sneak peak of the film before it comes out in the cinemas.

Distributers use various ways to market the film for e.g. they would create posters, banners, trailers etc... to attract the target audience. Distributers market their films online and mobiles as well. However this isn't the only way a film is marketed because it could be marketed through word of mouth.

The way our film would be marketed is that we're going to create posters which would be used to introduce it to the audience and to also attract them.

This isn't the only way we are going to market our media product. We are also going to market the film by creating merchandises and having other companies involved in selling our film so that it would attract a much wider audience i.e The Nokia company. They helped market Star Trek by converging Star Trek and the Nokia phone together.

Skills audit: Live type and sound

We practiced using 3 softwares livetype, final cut and soundtrack pro. These softwares are important in making thriller openings. Livetype is used for editing the titles and credits.

Final cut pro is used for editing clips, Before doing this we practiced on draft clips so we would know how to make them into a final clip.

The last software we used was soundtrack pro which is used for importing different sounds. It creates various sounds like high and low tension etc. We played around with different sound and finally came up with one that suited our thriller.

Filming in Green Street

The first day when we went out filming was that we decided to film in Green Street the reason why we wanted to film in Green Street was because our story line was about racism where the killer is white who only kills muslim women. We filmed in Green street because we needed a busy area full of asian people. The only problem we had in this was the time. We didn't have enough time to film and when we got there we was unable to film anything because we had to go back.

Thriller sub genres which inspire me

A thriller is a book or film which is designed to keep the reader or viewer on edge with suspenseful and sensational action. A thriller includes some of the following sub genres.
Action/adventure thriller, disaster thriller, historical thriller, medical thriller, religious thriller, psychological thriller and many more.
The sub genre which inspires me at the moments is a psychological thriler as it creates alot of suspense through out the films. The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds.
Psychological + Thriller - By combining these two terms, the definition changes to a narrative that makes the characters exposed to danger on a mental level rather than a physical one.

Intro to camera and health and safety tutorial

Before filming we had to learn how to use a camera. We learnt how to on the camera and put the battery and the memory card inside. we also learnt how to use different functions of the camera, like how to zoom in and out and how to focus while filming also how to place the camera on the tripod.

Technical audit of bait tutorial

During the lesson where we was taught how to use final cut pro, we first practised on other clips. We were old to look at the clips, edit them and create a final clip showing various camera angles and movements. We used match cuts to make the clips flow showing zooms and closeups of faces and objects for e.g the lunch box and the characters in the clips.

No country for old men

Suspense was created right from the beginning of this film by the Cohen brothers as it started with action taking place. The audience could tell straight away who the murderer was as we saw a guy being arrested by a police and as he sits in the police station he gets up and strangles the police men from behind with his handcuffs.

Safety of the Cameras

In the lesson we were introduced to the cameras and about the safety of them. We were taught how to put the battery in the camera, how to put in the memory cards and how to put it on the Tri-pod. We were shown how to put it on focus and how you could change the settings to make the shots look scary. As well as learning about the way the camera should be operated we were also shown and told how we must look after them. We were told to shut the shutter of the camera when we wasn't using it so that it prevents the lense getting dirty. The camera would automatically turn off if its not being used. If its raining the technicians would give an umbrella so that the camera doesn't get wet. Last but not least you should always make sure that everythings working fine before taking them out.

Casino royal

In the title sequence casino royal the style of the writing is really plain, white and simple. The pictures represent gambling, poker, fighting. The use of camera movements create suspense as it zooms into objects like guns and cards. This title sequence appeals to me because it looks a bit like a kaleidoscope because it has loads of different symmetrical patterns of the symbols of cards.
