The Cohen brothers use suspense through out the movie to create thriller. The ways they use suspense in the film is that they use various technical elements such as camerawork, sound, lighting, editing etc… The first thing that creates the suspense in the thriller movie is that it has an unexplained plot where there’s a psycho who ends up killing a lot of people and animals for the sake of it, chases a man then finally kills him and carries around an oxygen tank with him throughout. This is an unexplained plot because we don’t really get to know anything about the psycho on why he decides to kill the man even after getting the money and why does he like killing people. This also creates suspense because it’s about a delayed chase sequence and within this sequence others get murdered as well also because we don’t know when the psycho killer is actually going to catch the man or if he’s going to get killed himself. This arouses so many questions in the audiences head already because the killer and victim are so close but yet they’re apart. The audience are kept interested and are drawn in by the continuous suspense throughout the film.
The type of editing that is used is for instance parallel editing is used in one of the scenes where they show two events happening in two different locations both reaching for the same point. We are shown close ups of the tracking device once with the killer and once with the victim. This gives the two characters a link where the killer knows where the victim is and the victim knows where the killer is. In one of the scenes the red light blinks continuously letting the audience know that the killer is on the way this helps create suspense. However, in this scene we then see the light turn of as we see the shadow of the killer fade into complete darkness this shows danger because the light offered a sense of security and was the only way to see and kill the psycho. When the lights turn off there is a moment of silence which is used to build up tension making the scene even more dramatic where the killer is no where to be seen. The audience’s fear builds up until the point where the silence finally breaks when the doorknob shoots out. The audience give a shocked reaction because we see it through the victim’s perspective and can emphasise on how the victim is feeling. The diegetic sound of the gun shooting, smashing off the window, etc… emphasises the whole event and makes it seem more realistic and believable to the audience.
